Program:
Bring notebooks and pens!
Vicente Griego teaches cante that will be used in the cuadro, to accompany dancers. Letras and estribillos will be taught, and later will be joined with the dance and guitar in classes.
Cristian Puig teaches on Saturday only. He teaches guitar accompaniment for the cante and the dance. The focus is on accompaniment, not falsetas and technique. Cristian's material (chords, strumming pattern) matches the letras taught by Vicente. Guitarists who attend class on Saturday will accompany without a teacher the class on Sunday. Yeah!!
Julie Baggenstoss teaches dance for the cuadro: simple steps that permit listening and understanding the cante with an ear to the guitar, as well. The focus is on simple pasos and llamadas, and not on technique or long choreography. The dance is joined with the cante and guitar in classes.
All disciplines come together to work in the cuadro format, communicating, interacting, reacting, and succeeding in the structured improvisation that makes Flamenco so exciting.
Events are managed by Berdolé and presented by Peña la Pepa.
About Pena la Pepa Almost a year ago on May 10, 2014 Peña la Pepa founder and owner María José Salmeron wanted to share the vision and the magic of what she has learned and shared in Jerez de La Frontera, Spain, in the authentic Peñas Flamencas. In essence the concept of a Peña Flamenca revolves around having a space and an atmosphere of experiencing Flamenco art "up close an personal."
A "Peña" describes the traditional setting where people of southern Spain gather to celebrate their culture of local "barrios" and "gitanos." The art of Flamenco is the medium of dance, singing, and guitar.
Peña Flamenca La Pepa stands as a cultural association for recreation and sharing to promote an atmosphere of Flamenco in all its facets.
