Tour & Walk N.Berkeley Hills, Historic Architecure &Tilden Park-Botanic Gardens
Today's walk/hike of about five miles will see some of the most interesting, historic heritage houses, in the North Berkeley Hills. Houses by Bernard Maybeck, John Galen Howard, Julia Morgan and other renoun architects of the early and mid-20th century.
The houses in this area run the gamut of architectural styles from the late 19th century into the 1930s. And then our local Bay Area Regionalism style after the World War II.
Meet at Berryman St. & Shattuck Ave. next to the Berkeley Community Theater
We'll walk and hike (Wear very sturdy walking shoes or light hiking boots. Bring a bottle of water and lunch.) through parks, by the Civic Theater and Art Center; the Rose Garden, and onto beautiful streets with grand views and up stairway paths. Seeing folksinger Pete Seeger's family's home and music conservatory. The indoor/outdoor Temple of Wings, dance studio and more.

When we reach the top of the hills, we'll cross the ridge and down into Tilden Park; ending at the East Bay Regional Park's Botanic Gardens.
We'll catch the 1:00pm East Bay Regional Transit bus.($2.00 or Clipper Card) Getting back to the cars by 1:35pm.
Be sure to bring a bag lunch and a bottle of water. (There is no place to buy food along the way.
Wear sturdy walking shoes or light hiking boots. At this time of year dress in layers.
One of my favorite houses along the way is the Dempster house at the corner of Glen Ave. and Spruce St. The patriarch of the family, Clancey Dempster arrived in Calif. in 1850. What followed was an extraordinary Calif. family whose descendants still live in the family house built in 1907. Five generations of the family have lived in this house.
The Dempster family history is one from early Calif. pioneers to members that encompass a grassroots linkage to today's Silicon Valley. For the family story and a photo of their house, click.
