Sexualities in the Therapy Room Workshop with Shannon Solie, MA
This workshop will focus on the myriad ways that sexuality enters the therapy room. Using a sex-positive approach to therapy and therapeutic understanding we will examine how the therapist can bracket bias, as well as, assist the client to better understand internal and external oppression. We will discuss how the medicalization and diagnosing of desires and orientations add to oppression and othering through exploration of real world examples of desire, fetishes, sexual and gender representations. We will cover LGBTIA specific work in therapy, kink and non-monogamous relationships, and how to rediscover desire in long-term relationships. The goal of this workshop are to gain deeper understanding of how sexual expression and desire brings in additional understanding of the intersecting components of what it means to be human.
