Child Maltreatment: What Is It? How Do We Stop It? Feat. Janet Heimlich
Americans are well aware of high-profile cases of child abuse and neglect that take place in certain religious organizations and communities, from clergy sexual abuse in the Catholic Church to "faith healing"-related child deaths. But is religious faith a risk factor for maltreatment? Janet Heimlich, author of Breaking Their Will: Shedding Light on Religious Child Maltreatment, discusses a phenomenon that many of us are familiar with but may not fully understand. Whether you are a survivor of religious child maltreatment or concerned about children who are currently being victimized, it is critical to understand which children are at risk and how we can protect them and hold perpetrators accountable.

Janet Heimlich is an award-winning journalist as well as the author of the first book to take an in-depth, documented look at child abuse and neglect in the United States that is enabled by religious belief. She is also Executive Director of the Child-Friendly Faith Project, a national, nonprofit 501(c)(3) public charity that educates the public about the impact that religious, spiritual, and cultural beliefs and practices have on children. Ms. Heimlich has been a freelance reporter for National Public Radio and has written nonfiction articles for such publications as Texas Monthly, the Austin American-Statesman, and the Texas Observer. She has won nine journalism awards, including the regional Katie, the State Bar of Texas' Gavel Award, and a "Radio Journalist of the Year" Lone Star Award. She received a B.A. in Communications from Stanford University in 1984.

Don't miss this excellent speaker, presenting a topic that is of concern to all thoughtful believers as well as the secular and atheists community. Learn more at Religiouschildmaltreatment.com.
