Viva el Mariachi Femenil! - Vancouver
Two all-female Mariachi groups join forces to bring you a special evening honouring women in Mariachi!
Join Mariachis Flor de San Diego and Estrellas de Vancouver as they close the weekend of a Viva el Mariachi Femenil! event which features the work of Dr. Leonor Xochitl Perez. Her research traces the involvement of women in Mariachi as far back as 1903 and celebrates the contributions and advancements women have made to this cultural form.
Mariachi Flor de San Diego, that Dr. Perez leads with Mark Fogelquist as Musical Director, gave its debut performance at the Viva el Mariachi Femenil! Concert at Liberty Station in San Diego, California in March of 2014.
Mariachi Estrellas de Vancouver was created in August 2014 by Michelle Cormier and has brought together a group of talented women from diverse musical backgrounds such as jazz, classical and world music. The shared passion for this exciting and emotional musical form brings these two groups together for a special debut appearance.
Opening performance by Portuguese Guitarra player, Christina Gaspar.
Food will be available from Sal y Limon
Other events for the weekend include a lecture by Dr. Leonor Perez at the Global Lounge at the University o British Columbia on March 27 from 3 -5pm (Free) as well as a presentation of vintage photographs at Heartwood Cafe which will include a performance by Vancouver's Youth Mariachi, Los Tesoros from 7 - 10pm ($10 suggested donation, at door)
