MONTANA: The Shakespearean Scarface
THE NONPROPHET THEATER COMPANY - SOUTH presents MONTANA:The Shakespearean Scarface! Back by popular demand, fresh from an acclaimed run at the 2014 New Orleans Fringe Festival (as well as the 2013 St. Louis Fringe), The NonProphet Theater Company - South presents "MONTANA: The Shakespearean Scarface"!, running January 16th through February 1st, at The Marigny Theatre (formally the Allways Theatre), 1030 Marigny St., New Orleans.
In 1983, film director Brian DePalma and screenwriter Oliver Stone teamed up with esteemed actor Al Pacino to tell the tale of one man's meteoric rise and fall in Miami's drug trade. Now thirty-two years later, in 2015... re-imagine this timeless classic as if written by the greatest playwright of all time! While painstakingly re-written in "Fakespearean" iambic pentameter by playwright Robert A. Mitchell, MONTANA loses none of the flavor that has made Scarface such a treasured film event. Add a touch of that patented NonProphet humor, and you have an intense, action-packed and lovingly tongue-in-cheek homage to a movie revered by generations.
Here's what critics had to say: "Written in a mix of Elizabethan vernacular and Cuban slang, with direct quotes from several of Shakespeare's plays sliding in seamlessly, even calling Scarface himself a "foul, bunch-backed toad" (funnier still if you know some other famous Al Pacino roles)...While this sounds like a dangerously bold choice - imitating the Bard with Cuban accents - the productions' fast-paced committment to the ludicrousness of the premise and witty Elizabethan recreations hit a grand slam..." - Phil Yiannapoulus, NOLA Defender
"There's no better way to sum up "Montana" than with your best Tony Montana accent, and the words he uses to describe Omar Suarez, 'He fairly drips with flash, and with pizzazz.' Unlike Suarez, the NonProphets took the flash and pizzazz of Scarface, and imbued it with something else: humanity and humor". - James Anthofer, KDHX Radio - St. Louis
"With guns exchanged for daggers, this stripped down, but otherwise faithfully re-created play... hits upon a simple truth, I think - hearing foul language wrapped in iambic pentameter is just funny". Andrea Torrence, St. Louis Theatre Snob
Directed by Artistic Director Robert A. Mitchell, the cast includes Lena August, Andrew Gude, Shawn Gwin, Hilary Neff, Matthew Rigdon, Earl Scioneaux,Viviane Wolfe, and Sam Morel AS Tony Montana.
