Fruit Tree Grafting with Lee Reich
Learn all the basics of fruit tree grafting from Dr. Lee Reich, author of Grow Fruit Naturally, Landscaping with Fruit, and The Pruning Book. Reich lectures nationally on horticultural topics and has worked for both the USDA and Cornell University as a soil science researcher. His "farmden" in New Paltz, NY ("more than a garden and less than a farm"), which is a test site for innovative techniques in soil care, pruning, and growing fruits and vegetables, has been featured in The New York Times and Martha Stewart Magazine.
Reich will explain the theory and demonstrate techniques for whip and bridge grafts. All attendees will graft their own pear or Asian pear tree to bring home or donate to the Philadelphia Orchard Project to plant in a community orchard in the city. Space is limited for this hands-on workshop; advance registration required. Host site Bartram's Garden is the nation's oldest botanic garden and home to POP's largest orchard planting in the city of Philadelphia.
