Henry Flynt: Everlovin Game On

Saturday, June 1st, ISSUE presents philosopher, musician, anti-art activist and exhibited artist Henry Flynt performing Everlovin Game On, an evocation of his best-known work: You Are My Everlovin. Featuring solo electric violin and pre-recorded tambura, the piece brings together disparate vernaculars Southern blues, modal jazz, Appalachian fiddle, North Indian raga into a new and bracing whole.

Thursday, June 6th, DeForrest Brown Jr. (2017 Suzanne Fiol Curatorial Fellow) returns to curate Okonkwo Weeps In Exile, a new rhythmic opera featuring producer Nicholas Dawson (Bookworms), drummer Donald Sturge Anthony Mckenzie II, poet and "enlightened educator" Rafael Sanchez, with text from Guerilla essayist and twitter personality His Triumphant Blackness: The Negro Subversive.

Jennifer Walshe & Wobbly

Saturday, June 15th, ISSUE presents the debut NYC collaborative performance from vocalist and composer Jennifer Walshe and San Francisco-based musician and composer Wobbly (Jon Leidecker). The artists perform solo and collaborative works ranging across their shared interest in the idiosyncrasies of digital sound and the outer reaches of online culture. The show harvests artefacts from a wide range of sources including Walshes ALL THE MANY PEOPLS, and materials from Wobbly's weekly radio show Over The Edge -- as well as close readings of statements by Silicon Valley VCs, dream diaries, Irish myths generated by neural networks and much more.

Charmaine Lee: Laminals II with Victoria Shen

For her second residency performance, 2019 Artist-In-Residence Charmaine Lee premieres Laminals II, the second of three movements for a new long-form piece for solo voice. With particular attention given to amplification and physical technique, this movement further examines the possibilities of augmentation, distortion, and transformation of the human voice. In collaboration with visual and sound artist Victoria Shen, site-specific structures, microphones, and speakers organized in various acoustic and amplified environments are utilized in the continued exploration of the voice as a medium for organic and synthetic sound.

Rena Anakwe: Fast Forward to Silence

Thursday, July 11th, Rena Anakwe continues her 2019 residency with the premiere of Fast Forward to Silence, an immersive sound and body collage that honors the air around us. Focusing on shifting sequences that deviate between the minute and the rigorous, the piece explores the duality that air possesses, when in motion and in stillness, through a duet with collaborator Jonathan González (artist/performer) and lighting design by Kelley Shih.
