Christopher Freitag is joined by the Katonah Quartet in a recital of solo and ensemble works for classical guitar. The program features solo works by Villa-Lobos and Mertz along with Bach's great Chaconne. The Katonah Quartet joins for a Vivaldi concerto and a selection of works by Fernando Sor arranged by the French guitarist Roland Dyens.
Chris earned degrees in guitar performance from the University of South Dakota and Temple University, but his career path led him into publishing. Inspired by Practicing, the wonderful memoir by Glenn Kurtz, he took up the guitar again in 2008. In 2013 he had his first lesson in 30 years when he began studies with Jason Vieaux. The following year he was invited to perform in Jason's master class at the annual Cleveland International Classical Guitar Festival. In recent years he has performed in classes at the festival for Nigel North, Ricardo Gallén, Pavel Steidl, and Petra Poláckova.
In 2019, Chris undertook The Chaconne Project, a year-long exploration of Bach's masterpiece with the goal of starting from the violin score and ending with a public performance of his own guitar arrangement. Earlier this spring he performed the work in a private concert in Florida, at Georgetown University as part of their Friday Music Series, and in a recital in his home town of Sioux Falls, SD. This New York performance marks the conclusion of the project.
Chris resides in Chestnut Ridge, NY and is the music book editor at W.W. Norton and Company , an independent and employee-owned publisher.
