Our holiday concert, Hodie! This Joyful Day, brings you an eclectic selection of works to get you in the holiday mood, starting with our featured piece, Hodie! by the well-known choral composer, Z. Randall Stroope, accompanied by organ, percussion and brass ensemble. The title of the piece refers to the Latin text, Hodie Christus natus est, a medieval paraphrase of the Biblical text describing the day of Christ's birth. The music is by turns brilliantly exultant and quietly reverent, beginning with a brass fanfare and returning in the last movement to the combined forces of the instrumental and vocal ensembles singing a mighty Alleluia. We are delighted to be joined in the third movement of this piece by the 18-voice Olympic Girls' Choir in their first performance with the Chorale.
Other shorter works encompass a variety of moods, from an exquisitely simple and meditative arrangement of the beloved classic Away in a Manger by acclaimed 21st century Norwegian composer Ola Gjeilo, to a rollicking medley of mid-20th century popular holiday favorites, guaranteed to have you humming along with us.
