GHP's Symphony VI
Austin's indie classical institution, Golden Hornet Project, presents its biggest concert ever!
A thirty piece string orchestra conducted by Ludek Drizhal will perform two world premieres and a Texas premiere.
For the first time ever in Texas and only the third time in the United States, "Popcorn Superhet Receiver" by Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead will be performed. Commissioned by the BBC and used extensively in the score of Paul Thomas Anderson's There Will Be Blood, "Popcorn Superhet Receiver" is a triumph of composition by one of the most adventurous rock musicians working today.
Inspired by the life and work of 19th century inventor and mathematician Charles Babbage, GHP Co-Artistic Director Graham Reynolds composed "The Difference Engine", a triple concerto for violin, cello, and piano with string orchestra. A lecture on Babbage by L. B. Deyo at the monthly Dionysium brought the subject and piece into focus. Featuring soloists Jonathan Dexter on cello, Leah Zeger on violin, and the composer at the piano, Reynolds developed the concerto on and off for two years, starting with an Austin Museum of Art commission for a piano suite responding to the art of Sol LeWitt (fifth movement), continuing with the score for the Rude Mechanicals Method Gun (fourth movement), and finally through the process of recording the album version, to be released in conjunction with the premier concert. The other world premiere to be performed is Co-Artistic Director Peter Stopschinski's "Rough Night with Happy Ending" for violins, violas, cellos, basses, percussion, harp, and piano, featuring Austin's premier harpist Elaine Barber. "This symphony is a musical depiction of a long hard night with a pleasant morning sunrise," explained Stopschinski. "Things start off a little overwhelming in the first movement, we try to maintain our cool in the second movement, and become really violent in the third before a very sublime happy ending and maybe a breakfast buffet!" The main musical thread that ties all of the movements together is the concept of Digital Delay or Echo. Stopschinski has split the violins sections from their usual positions to 9 on the left side and 9 on the right side to enhance the echoing effects in the room.
