Bach: The Goldberg Variations (Clavier-Ubung Vol. IV)
As part of his continuing exploration of J. S. Bach's Klavier-Ubung collection, harpsichordist Carsten Schmidt performs the magisterial Goldberg Variations. This work, published in 1741 as Volume IV of the series, includes a theme and 30 variations. It is one of the most performed--and at the same time, one of the most physically and technically demanding--solo keyboard compositions written during the 18th century. Bach revels in both virtuosity and contrapuntal wizadry, with variations ranging from the comic to the sublime.
