Claiming the Sky - 2015 VocalPoint Concerts
At the concerts, a free-will donation will be collected, 100% of which benefits The Advocates for Human Rights.
Human rights abuses are real. Girls are being sold into the sex trade around the world and right here in Minnesota. Domestic violence makes headlines, involving sports heroes and movie stars and our next door neighbors. Girls are being denied the right to education and the right to freedom. Women's health care decisions are made by employers rather than doctors. However, those realities are only part of the story. In partnership with The Advocates for Human Rights, VocalPoint will lift up strong women through song. These women have made their voices heard and they are daring to claim the sky.
Joining the 70-voice VocalPoint chorus is Zenon Dance Company, one of the nation's premier repertory dance companies. Zenon captivates audiences with a rare and dynamic blend of modern and jazz. Soloist Nicole Warner, whose voice has been described as a "hearty mezzo [brimming] with caramel and chocolate richness," brings her own story as a survivor of domestic violence. Chimgee Haltarhuu is a Mongolian immigrant who teaches and performs at Circus Juventas. Also a survivor of domestic violence, she has helped The Advocates with its domestic violence work in Mongolia. And finally, we welcome Nothando Zulu, President of the Black Storyteller Alliance, who will read the powerful poetry of Dr. Maya Angelou.
Due to mature subject matter, age discretion is advised.
