Lou & Peter Berryman in concert
Lou & Peter Berryman are a songwriting team from Madison WI whose clean and intelligent humor have delighted audiences for more than 30 years. Frequent visitors to Minnesota public radio, Lou & Peter's music invites comparison to Tom Lehrer and the Smothers Brothers, Jacques Brel and Gilbert and Sullivan, but their unique style and energetic and friendly performances on 12-string guitar and accordion is all their own. They remain rooted in their native Wisconsin, discovering a long time ago that the Midwestern human condition is not particularly different from the human condition elsewhere: their affectionate observations make us all laugh until our cheeks hurt.
Knee-Slapping Folk: Wedded bliss went south for Lou & Peter Berryman, but their musical relationship has grown over the past twenty years. Their off-kilter harmonies buoyed by accordion and guitar back some of the best lyric zingers and funniest songs to come out of the Midwest. The Berrymans (who long ago married other partners) continue to write and sing songs that poke fun at the human plight, idiosyncrasies of living in America, sports, and painting the living room when the world is crumbling around them and us. As silly as they sometimes get, love comes through, adding warmth and depth and turning what could have been a comedy act into an evening of insight. Until New Folk Collective closed its doors last year, Lou & Peter Berryman's last-weekend-before-Thanksgiving show was an annual near-sell-out for the organization. This year the concert will be at the same great location, sponsored by the artists themselves.
