Sound Circle: Appetite
Advance sales for the January 11 performance have ended. There will be a small number of tickets available at the door. The box office opens at 4:00 pm, one hour before concert time.

We have been raised to fear the yes within ourselves.
--Audre Lorde

To know enough's enough
Is enough to know.
--Lao Tzu/Ursula LeGuin

Sound Circle's Solstice Concert this year is "Appetite." It's an exploration of the profoundly simple--but not easy--question: "What do I want?" To be human, it seems, is not only to have appetite, but also to have a conflicted relationship with appetite. The holiday season strikes us as a wonderfully appropriate time to offer a sympathetic exploration of the challenges and pleasures presented by appetite.

Musical selections include the intricate and compelling Seeking Enough, a new four-part commissioned work by composer Carol Matthews, who wrote our first commissioned work, Clangor, Clamor, Clapperclaw, in 1996. The piece is textless, but is inspired by passages from Ursula LeGuin's rendition of Lao Tzu's Tao Te Ching. The program will also include original songs, arrangements and improvisations by Sound Circle singers; music by Lucinda Williams, Becky Reardon, Moira Smiley, Tracy Chapman, Enya, Coco's Lunch; and spoken word.

The main point is developing some kind of appetite for the universe, that everything is workable and lovable.
--Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche

With anorexia, I merely elevated to an art form what so many women do with their appetites all of the time...Weighing, measuring, calculating, monitoring. Withholding and then over-compensating. The female appetite moves in guilty, circuitous ways.
--Caroline Knapp
