Power Trip Theatrically Berkeley
"We're trying to start a movement here" Tom Bates - Mayor of Berkeley.
In 2006 when the City of Berkeley passed Measure G, the most aggressive stance against climate change in the country, this film set out to follow just how a modern city built into an old grid could reduce their greenhouse gas emissions by 80% with little to no specifics. As filming began the focus was quickly distracted by a cast of characters with a variety of radical ideas and progressive issues.
"This town is fundamentally schizophrenic." -Richard Brenneman - Berkeley Daily Planet.
This film pulls back the covers on Berkeley politics and progressiveness. It serves as a quirky yet serious time capsule of modern day Berkeley, with all its wonders and faults. A very unique voyeur perspective, this film lived on the ground for two years within the multiple fronts and battles throughout the city. With attention to causes ranging form social justice, environmental, to anti war, the focus was really on the characters; mayors and press, activists and icons, overstated and outspoken citizens. It becomes a tale of recycled faces with deep back stories of activism and animosity. What we witness in this film is that in Berkeley, nothing goes unconnected. Although the question may be in this environment; how does Berkeley get anything done? The assessment is; this may just be the only way Berkeley gets anything done.
