Handel & Purcell Extravaganza
The Handel & Purcell Extravaganza will take place in Staunton's Blackfriars Theater, the world's only re-creation of Shakespeare's original indoor theatre, and "one of the most historically important theaters in the world," according to Andrew Gurr, former research director of the Globe Theatre, London.
Works by Purcell will include: Overture and Air, from King Arthur, Act I; Brave Souls, to be renownd in story, from King Arthur, Act I; If Musick be the food of Love; Where the Deities approve; Sound the Trumpet; What power art thou; Round thy coast; Chaconne in C, from The Fairy Queen; Pavana in B flat; and Passacaglia, from King Arthur, Act IV.
Works by Handel will include: Entre, from Delirio amoroso; Qui laugel da pianta in pianta; Fammi combattere; Andante larghetto and Allegro, from Concerto grosso in F, op. 5, No.2; Cara Sposa; Prelude, from Keyboard Suite in d; Scoglio d'immota fronte; Adagio, from Violin Sonata in g; Passacaglia, from Keyboard Suite in g (arranged for two harpsichords), additional selections from Delirio amoroso, Riccardo Primo, Agrippina, Hercules, and more.
Performers will include: Katharine Dain, soprano; Drew Minter, countertenor; Ian Howell, countertenor; Michael Haag, bass; the Madison Singers (Patrick Walders, director); and the SMF Baroque Players. Musical Director: Carsten Schmidt.
