Eilen Jewell In Concert with Possum Trot Orchestra
If  Neko Case, Madeleine Peyroux and Billie Holiday had a baby girl who grew up to front a rockabilly band, she'd probably sound a lot like Eilen Jewell. Jewell (her first name rhymes with "feelin'") and her three piece band captivating crowds of folks on their current tour with selections from newly released record "Sea of Tears," which has been rocketing up the Americana charts.

Although "Sea of Tears" is Jewell's third album (she's also released one as part of rockabilly gospel group the Sacred Shakers), the Boston-based artist has yet to come into Tift Merritt or Kathleen Edwards levels of alt-country fame.
But watching her perform, it seems that it's only a matter of time, for Jewell is a roots music star in the making.
Backed by the Eddie Cochran-esque / Dick Dale-ish guitar of Jerry Miller, Jewell punctuated well-written originals with Holiday and Bessie Smith covers, plus three Loretta Lynn classics. Tonite her 90-minute set was over far too soon, considering that this may be one of the last times Jewell and her band play such an intimate venue.
At the end Jewell, interspersing songs with witty asides, remarked that the crowd was one she'd like to take on tour with the band. Based on the applause, the feeling was mutual.

The third record from Boise-ID singer-songwriter Eilen Jewell's Sea of Tears evokes the era of classic country and early British-invasion era blues rock .
On 'Sea Of Tears,' Eilen Jewell is more Dusty Springfield than Gillian Welch. Sea of Tears finds Jewell acknowledging her electric influences and the roots of rock and roll on the album's twelve tracks. On the record she pays homage to British invasion of the sixties, bands like The Kinks and The Animals; her forlorn, yet confident, delivery matches slow rock and resonant guitar sounds throughout the record.

Although nine of the tracks are Jewell originals, the entire album could easily have been recorded over forty years earlier. Sea of Tears has a smooth sliding pace that is punctuated by a chill of sharp guitar and the tone can be summarized in the words of "Shakin' All Over." In the track, a cover of Johnny Kidd & The Pirates' recording, Jewell expertly explains the album's sound in the lyrics, "Quivers down the back bone...shakin' all over." The slow syncopation on the record hits the listener like ice water on a hot sunny day, unexpected but appreciated.

 No Depression
"Jewell is showing she can wander with the best of them, and write riveting song-stories about her adventures along the way."

"I just like [vintage music] better than the stuff that's happening today, which to me has a soulless, commercial sound," Eilen says. "Music from the '60s and earlier all sounds to me like real people playing real instruments, as opposed to engineers and producers tweaking dials and knobs. To me, less-produced music is more effective. It hits me deeper."
