Description: While generally known as a composer of operas, Gaetano Donizetti in fact also composed a great many other works, including chamber and orchestral music. The beautiful Sonata in C Major for flute and piano demonstrates that Donizetti's command of the exquisite vocal line was not confined solely to his operas and that he could also write in a carefree, infectiously Rossinian vein.
Come For: Over a hundred years since his birth and nearly a quarter century after his death, Aaron Copland (1900-1990) continues to be the archetypal American composer. Copland, like several American composers before him, studied in Europe, but where his predecessors came out of the experience able to write accomplished music in a European style, Copland was able to create something distinctive, incorporating folk music into an approachable musical language. The Duo for Flute and Piano was composed in 1971. It opens with a typical Copland gesture, a serene movement that sounds as if it was crafted from American folk music.
