TAK, a NYC-based contemporary chamber ensemble known for its experimental aesthetic and "telepathic group energy," will present an evening of new works on Sunday, May 25 at 8 pm in Benzaquen Hall at the DiMenna Center for Classical Music in New York. Two new world premieres will be featured at the performance; Sam Pluta's 'Escape Strategies (Pop! Pop! Pop?... Float Away)', and Marek Poliks's 'hull not continent'. Pluta's work stands at the polar opposite of the energy spectrum, showcasing noisy electronic "instruments" including tube television, amplified alka-seltzer, and four helium balloons. Notated in his own original system that is littered with evocative text and colors, Poliks's piece creates a static, shifting atmosphere, featuring guest guitarist Kevin Dee.
Works by David Bird and Taylor Brook will also be on the program. Brook's work 'Five Weather Reports' (with new video by David Bird), which TAK premieres at the Queens New Music Festival on May 18, explores a post-apocalyptic setting for soprano, electronics, flute, clarinet, violin, and percussion. Bird's work 'Flatland' was commissioned by the Columbia Composers Organization for the Talea ensemble and was recently premiered with conductor; TAK will perform 'Flatland' without conductor, welcoming guest artists Michael Davis, Kivie Cahn-Lipman and Tristan McKay to join the core group. This concert is made possible in large part by a grant from the Alice M. Ditson Fund of Columbia University, which TAK received in 2014.
TAK is: a New York-based ensemble that consistently delivers intensely visceral and challenging programs, highlighting their almost telepathic group energy. TAK's ravenous curiosity for expanding musical limitations joins them in collaboration with generationally relevant composers, musicians, and multi-disciplinary artists, to create new works that redefine the challenges of performative virtuosity. Through dialogue in both the composition and performance processes, TAK encourages new music's community-driven need for curiosity and experimentation. Recently TAK has had the pleasure of working with esteemed composers Sam Pluta, Mario Diaz de Leon, Marek Poliks, Natacha Diels, Ashkan Behzadi, Taylor Brook and David Bird, among others. They have performed throughout New York City in performance spaces such as the DiMenna Center for Classical Music, New Amsterdam Records, Firehouse Space, Spectrum Gallery, Uptown Underground, and the Douglass Street Music Collective. They were recently invited by the Oberlin Modern Music Guild to give a masterclass and performance in Oberlin Conservatory's Fairchild Chapel.
