ASCE COPRI Seattle - October 29th Dinner Meeting
Topic:

Challenges with Habitat Restoration in Superfund Sites  Duwamish River Peoples Park & Shoreline Habitat (formerly Terminal 117) and Terminal 25
This presentation will highlight two current examples from the Port of Seattles Habitat Line of Business. One example is the construction of the 14-acre Duwamish River Peoples Park and Shoreline Habitat within the footprint of the Terminal 117 early action cleanup site. The other involves the planned implementation of the Terminal 25 early action cleanup, which will restore 10 acres along the East Waterway. An overview of the Natural Resource Damage Assessment (NRDA) process for the Lower Duwamish Waterway and Harbor Island Superfund Sites will also be provided. This process is leading to significant restoration efforts in these urban areas. These restoration projects, along with several others, aim to recover valuable but limited intertidal habitat to support juvenile salmon and generate credits for settlements under NRDA. The presentation will discuss the design and construction challenges involved in integrating cleanup efforts with restoration, including how ongoing Superfund cleanups are coordinated after restoration is completed.
