Event
Evening of Native Dance
Halau Hula Napuaokalei'ilima performs a program of ancient and contemporary Hawaiian dance as performed for the Heard Museums 50th Anniversary. Drum beats on the Hawaiian traditional double gourd drum and the shark-skin drum mark the start of ancient hula dances that describe stories and legends of times past. These chants and dances illustrate how, without a written language, these stories and history of their ancestors were passed down from one generation to another. As a native indigenous culture in the Pacific, the Hawaiian people share similar cultural practices with their Native American cousins.
Dancing Earth is an inspirational array of Indigenous contemporary dance artists who work as a collaborative ensemble under the leadership of Rulan Tangen. Dancing Earth strives to embody the unique essence of Indigenous identity and perspective by creation and renewal of artistic and cultural movement rituals.
Ancient and futuristic, their dances are an elemental language of bone and blood memory in motion. Springing from the heart and spirit of originator Rulan Tangen, they create bridges for art and humanity, tradition and experimentation. Unified by vision, they cultivate the artistry of each individual on behalf of empowerment of all Indigenous peoples. With passionate and committed artistic exploration, they revitalize issues of environmental, social, cultural, spiritual, historical, educational and philosophical relevance.
