About Lace up your best hiking boots (or ice skates!) and pack your bags, because this program of short films is taking you around the world, and to worlds beyond our own! Explore distant planets, atmospheric forests, and even your own memories as you venture out into the vast and exciting unknown. Just watch out for strange new creatures, they might be your best new companion
Films in this program include:
Brambletown (Eric Power, 2024, United States, 33:41, in English) Brambletown explores connection and belonging within ourselves, with each other, and with nature. The film tells the story of Fox and Badger: two lifelong friends who return to their childhood home of Brambletown, only to find that things have changed. As they grow apart, experience new hurts, and navigate major disruption to their forest community, Fox and Badger learn that even in the darkest moments, they still have the power to heal.
The Odd Carrot (Inese Pavne, 2024, Latvia, 9:28, in Latvian with English Subtitles) Two bunnies find a precious thin carrot, only to have it stolen by an angry badger. They are often bullied by the bigger beasts of the forest, until the bunnies stumble upon a mysterious, medium-sized vegetable, setting in motion a chain of events that will change their fate forever.
ANIMANIMUSICAL (Julia Ocker, 2024, Germany, 3:28, no dialogue) The Animanimals want to do a big musical performance but somebody got the wrong notes.
Hoofs on Skates (Ignas Meilnas, 2024, Lithuania, 12:24, no dialgoue) In a winter wonderland two friends are having a blast ice-skating on a frozen lake when suddenly a strange and unfamiliar world cracks open underneath them. Now they must learn how to deal with the other kind, not letting the fear and preconceptions rule.
Forever Seven (Antje Heyn & Alexander Isert, 2024, Germany, 9:26, in English) A box is a box is a box. Sometimes though its just a matter of perspective to discover something completely different behind it.
Fishing (Elena Kurkova, 2024, Russian Federation, 3:59, no dialogue) A man comes to the shore of a lake to fish, but he does not have suitable bait. Finally he finds a worthy one a worm, and throws it into the lake. Then the fisherman dozed off and dreamed that he was underwater on a hook instead of a worm. Waking up from the nightmare, he begins to sympathize with the worm, and they begin a friendship.
High Diver (Ocar Bittner, 2024, Germany, 4:48, no dialogue) Since early childhood, Tuan and Felix have been inseparable. As they train to become Olympic high divers, however, their budding love for each other suffers under the weight of the competition. Professional sport is a harsh business, and Tuan will sacrifice everything for it or will he?
The Other Planet (Collective 10 Children, 2024, Belgium, 5:47, no dialogue) The Red Planet is under attack. Its inhabitants are forced to leave. They land on the Blue Planet, where people are not particularly welcoming
How rnomelj Got its Name (Drutvo Slon, 2024, Slovenia, 2:03, in Swiss German with English subtitles) The story of a miserly miller and a fairy who cast a spell on his mill to grind only black flour. The story of how a small town in the south-east of Slovenia got its name. We made the film entirely on sacks of flour, which we drew with charcoal and chalk.
Nainais Recipe (Daya Lee, 2024, United States, 2:59, in English and Yue Chinese with English subtitles) After a turbulent day at the restaurant leaves Nainai in tears, her grandson Sho decides to step up to save the dumpling shop.
Three Colours (Lana Gredelj, 2024, Croatia, 9:56, in Croatian with English subtitles) Three Colours is a short film about the perception of life after a personal loss. Using experimental visuals, land-art and soundscapes, the natural world becomes a decor to express the unsayable.
Blink (Hadai Khan, 2024, Australia, 3:56, English) Blink is stop motion film that explores the notion that everyone sees the world differently based on their past experiences. The animation was written and produced by grade 5/6 students at Belle Vue Park Primary School with a music score composed by students at Doveton College.
The Cicada (Seoyeon AHN, 2024, Republic of Korea, 9:27, in Korean with English subtitles) The Cicada, who seems to have moved into an empty cave, tells his story. In three different scenes, he talks about meaningful dreams and lingering feelings from the past, things he can choose in his current life and their limitations, and a decision that he finally makes.
