Practical Considerations for Specifying Heat Pump Water Heaters
Course Description: Heat pump water heaters (HPWH) have quickly become indispensable for complying with the California energy code (Title 24, Part 6). This class will lead architects and designers through proper location choices for heat pump water heaters, as well as ventilation, maintenance, power, and condensate management, so that you can specify these units with confidence. This course will also detail the greenhouse gas reduction benefits of heat pump technologies and how they contribute toward achieving a project's Zero Net Carbon Design goals.
Learning Objectives:
1. Understand how heat pump water heaters work by pulling heat from the surrounding air.
2. Learn proper locations and ventilation requirements to ensure HPWHs have an adequate source of heat and can be effectively maintained.
3. Compare operational Carbon emissions of typical gas water heaters and HPWHs as part of a zero net carbon design.
4. Using case studies, see how to show HPWHs on plan sets to ensure smooth installation in the field.
