Bow Valley Chorus presents Requiem by Gabriel Fauré
Bow Valley Chorus presents Requiem by Gabriel Fauré Bow Valley Chorus is eagerly anticipating their spring concert presentation of Faurés Requiem! The Requiem was composed in 1888 when Fauré was in his forties, quite probably in response to the recent death of his father. Shortly after its first performance, Faurés mother also died, giving the work an added poignancy. Of the many settings of the Requiem, this is probably the most widely loved. In comparison with the large-scale masterpieces of Verdi, Brahms, and Berlioz, Faurés setting seems gentle and unassuming, yet it is this very quality of understatement that contributes so eloquently to the works universal appeal, and it is impossible not to be moved by the ethereal beauty of this humble masterpiece. Bow Valley Chorus, under the inspirational and award-winning musical direction of John Goulart, will be accompanied by a 20-piece orchestra and will feature Soprano soloist Hannah Pagenkopf and Bass Adam Brousseau. Also on the program is Faurés Cantique de Jean Racine, and Mozart's Te Deum and Ave Verum. Bow Valley Chorus has become a vital and integral part of the Banff-Canmore cultural community. We are now proudly in our twenty-third year of wonderful choral existence! Since its genesis, the Chorus - under the talented direction of founder John Goulart - has performed a wide variety of classical compositions with orchestral accompaniment and professional soloists. Past productions include: Appalachian Winter (Martin), The Armed Man (Jenkins), Missa Gaia (Winter); Mozarts Requiem, Great Mass in C Minor and Vespers; Vivaldis Gloria; Haydns Lord Nelson Mass; Faurés Requiem; Rutters Requiem, Magnificat, Te Deum, Gloria, Mass of the Children and The Reluctant Dragon; Bernsteins Chichester Psalms; Schuberts Mass in G; Charpentiers Messe de Minuit pour Noel; Ramirezs Misa Criolla; Pinkhams Christmas Cantata with Foothills Brass Quintet and numerous performances of Handel's Messiah. Bow Valley Chorus also has had the honour of performing with international and award-winning trio Tenore, internationally renowned children's performer Fred Penner, international opera star Measha Brueggergosman, jazz great Holly Cole, and The Canadian Brass, not to mention singing the official 2010 Olympic Torch Relay Anthem for the torch's arrival in both Canmore and Banff. Our maestro, John Goulart, is a recipient of the Con Spirito Award from the Alberta Choral Federation, given annually in recognition of the spirit and dedication of individuals to choral music in their communities.
