The Sebastians present Daniel S. Lee and Jeffrey Grossman in Recital
Baroque violinist Daniel S. Lee and harpsichordist Jeffrey Grossman, the co-leaders of the acclaimed Sebastians, will perform a duo recital featuring works by Bach, Biber, Corelli, Fontana, Froberger, Handel, Telemann, and Vivaldi. The program will explore the emergence of the instrumental styles of 17th-century Italy and the adaptation of the Italian styles in 18th-century Austro-Germany.
Period violinist Daniel S. Lee enjoys a varied career as a soloist, chamber musician, concertmaster, and teacher. Praised for his "ravishing vehemence" (The New York Times), he has appeared as a soloist and guest leader with the Trinity Baroque Orchestra, Early Music New York, New York Baroque Incorporated, American Baroque Orchestra, Baroque Orchestra of Maine, Quodlibet Ensemble, San Francisco Bach Choir, TENET and Yale Collegium Players. He also regularly collaborates with. He won the Audience Prize at the 2012 Early Music America Baroque Performance Competition with his ensemble, the Sebastians, whose performance at the finals of the 2011 York Early Music International Competition was praised for its "smooth sophistication" (Yorkshire Post) and "well-thought-out articulation and phrasing" (Early Music Review). As a violino piccolo specialist, he frequently appears as a soloist in Bach's first Brandenburg Concerto and cantata 140, and has given the modern-day premiere of Johann Pfeiffer's concerto. Jeffrey Grossman's extensive musical activities include frequent performances as a harpsichordist, pianist, and conductor. Acclaimed for his musicality, he has been praised as a "sensitive and fluent accompanist" of "flair and conviction" in Fanfare magazine. A native of Detroit, Michigan, he holds degrees from Harvard College, the Juilliard School, and Carnegie Mellon University. Jeffrey performs with numerous groups in the New York metropolitan area, including the Sebastians, PHOENIXtail, the Bach Players of Holy Trinity, Concitato, and Fire & Folly. He also tours parts of the rural United States with artists of the Piatigorsky Foundation. He can be heard on the Gothic, Naxos, Albany, Métier, and MSR Classics record labels. The Sebastians (www.sebastians.org) are a dynamic and vital musical ensemble specializing in music of the Baroque and Classical eras. Lauded as "everywhere sharp-edged and engaging" (The New York Times), the Sebastians have also been praised for their "well-thought-out articulation and phrasing" (Early Music Review) and "elegant string playing... immaculate in tuning and balance" (Early Music Today). Winners of the Audience Prize at the 2012 Early Music America Baroque Performance Competitions, the Sebastians were also finalists in the 2011 York International Early Music Competition and the 2011 Early Music America/Naxos Recording Competition. In 2013-2014, the Sebastians continue for the second season as ensemble-in-residence at All Angels' Church in New York City and will spend a semester as artists-in-residence at Connecticut College. In addition, their season contains a tour to Columbus, OH, collaborations with TENET (www.tenetnyc.com), and performances with Salon/Sanctuary Concerts and Parkville Classicals, among others. In August 2013, the Sebastians collaborated with dell'Arte Opera Ensemble to present a fully-staged production of Monteverdi's L'incoronazione di Poppea.
