Ukulele Strumming & Chord Changing: Tweaks & Hacks to Improve Your Playing
Ready for a breakthrough with your ukulele playing? This lighthearted workshop will be packed with tools & tips to move you forward. Whether you've been playing for a while or feel stuck in first gear, you'll get fresh material & exercises to noodle around with & improve your play.
Sometimes all it takes is a slight change in how you're playing to have a ukulele breakthrough. This lighthearted workshop will be packed with exactly that. Whether you've been playing for a while or feel like you're stuck in first gear, you'll get a lot of fresh material and exercises to noodle around with and improve your play.
We will focus on the physicality of the strum and explore ways to synchronize it with a song. We'll work on smoothing out those chord transitions and learn how to make learning the hard ones easier.
To get the most out of the workshop, it'll help to be able to do at least a basic strum and to be familiar with about ten common chords (for example, A, A7, Am, C, D, D7, Dm, E7, Em, F, G, G7). Mostly, you need an adventurous spirit and a song in your heart, even if you're too shy to sing it out loud.
This class is based on high- and low-G ukulele in standard tuning (GCEA). Baritone chords will not be covered, but many of the strumming and chord transition techniques will apply to that instrument as well. We'll have a lefty uke to try out!
This workshop is geared for adults but kids are welcome if accompanied by a guardian.
Don't have a uke handy? Sign up for a loaner (while supplies last), free of charge.
It can help to bring a music stand to hold your class packet, which will be emailed to you a few days prior to class.
The post-workshop jam session is a great way to try out your new skills and rattle the rafters with song. If you're afraid of making mistakes, don't worry: We'll ALL be making mistakes! That's part of the giddy fun of playing together. Chords and lyrics will be available to download a few days prior to class -- print 'em out or read them on your device.
YOUR TEACHER Ukulele Clare Innes has taught hundreds of students how to play the ukulele. She offers a wide variety of classes and private lessons in person and online. Clare lives in the Burlington, VT, area and performs with her string band Mama Tried. Find out more at ukuleleclare.com.
