Country Joe McDonald Tribute to Woody Guthrie
Paul Emery Productions and the Foothill Theatre Company will be holding a nostalgic tribute to Woody Guthrie on April 9, show starts at 7:30 p.m. Country Joe McDonald (formerly of the 60s socially conscious rock band Country Joe and the Fish) will be performing at the Nevada Theatre and the show will be from his recently released a two-disc C.D. set A Tribute to Woody Guthrie. The show will include songs by Guthrie and others, readings from Guthries writings and Joes reminiscences of his own family. This quote, taken from Wikepedia speaks to the impact and longevity of Woody Guthries legacy; Admittedly, the intersection of space and time at the corner of July 14, 1912, and Okemah, Oklahoma, was a long shot to produce anything like a national treasure. Woody was born in one of the most desolate places in America, just in time to come of age in the worst period in our history. ... He became the living embodiment of everything a people's revolution is supposed to be about: that working people have dignity, intelligence and value above and beyond the market's demand for their labor. ... For me personally, Woody is my hero of heroes and the only person on earth that I will go to my grave regretting that I never met. Steve Earle in "Woody Guthrie" in The Nation (21 July 2003) Upon release of the CD set, a reviewer from the San Francisco Chronicle had this to say about McDonalds treatment of Woodys legacy; McDonald channels this wry, compassionate mans wisdom without ever getting in the way, a refreshingly egoless performance by someone who remains as amazed by Guthrie as anyone. San Francisco Chronicle, May 14, 2007.
Paul Emery, who is producing the show on behalf of the Foothill Theatre Company, says he wants to bring the Woody tribute to town because, Country Joe bridges the generation between the Dust Bowl and Woodstock. No one tells the story and sings the songs of Woody Guthrie as well as Country Joe MacDonald. In these trying times for many people, Country Joes tribute serves to remind us that we can get through these difficult times the way others have before us.
