Bobby Thompson Trio / GXB / Ramona Martinez @ 38North
Awe-inspiring master guitarist and vocalist Bobby Thompson is no stranger to the blues and rock world. He cut his teeth learning to play in the old blues clubs of D.C. from the likes of Bobby Parker. After honing his craft as a much sought after support man, Thompson decided to step out as a solo artist, releasing seven albums since 2011.
In 2018, Bobby won a WAMMIE (Washington Area Music Association) award for 2018 best blues album, and although there are strong overtones of the blues in his writing, he sees himself essentially as a folk-blues singer-songwriter. Songwriting, blues elements, and great guitar merge in this one time concert. Known for rarely slowing down, Bobby's fronted bands like Blueheart Revival and Revelator Hill, and been a sideman for artists such as Justin Jones (930 Club Records), Laura Tsaggaris, and he once even toured with SOJA for three months back in 2009.
For our event May 19th, Bobby will be joined by Christopher Brown on bass and Ben Tufts on drums.
GXB is a brand new band from the DMV, fusing 70s rock, proto-punk and classic country influences. Built around the compelling songwriting of Guy Bouchie, the trio is rounded out by Ben Tufts on bass guitar and Ben Melrod on drums. They are excited to make their live debut at 38North!
Ramona Martinez is a prolific singer-songwriter from Charlottesville who pulls inspiration from her own life to write country songs about heartbreak and hangovers. Ramona has been performing with her band The Holy Smokes since late April of 2022. They will be recording an EP this winter and touring more extensively in the Spring of 2023--but on the 5/19 we'll be treated to a very special solo Ramona set.
