This is My Africa 50 min | African Continent, Nigeria, UK | 2008 Director: Zina Saro-Wiwa West Coast Premiere
THIS IS MY AFRICA (TIMA) is an award-winning documentary film that is all about showing an alternative vision of Africa. A vision that is not only about war, corruption, famine and chaos. TIMA features people like Chiwetel Ejiofor, Jon Snow, Colin Firth, Mourad Mazouz, Yinka Shonibare and many more. Each interviewee is given a questionnaire and all the answers are remixed to provide what could be considered a crash course in African culture. (At least the African cultures that resonate with the interviewees in the film). TIMA is, however, more than just a film. It is a movement. A movement that is determined not to allow Africa's problems entirely define the continent. TIMA is providing an alternative vision of Africa. It allows you telling us what YOUR Africa is and all of us learning from it and getting to grips with the myriad African Cultures there are out there. It's about discovering new African music, new African art, new African writers, new places to visit, new ideas... It is open to all Africa lovers wherever you are from in the world.
The Power of Art: Women Voices in Africa 51 min | African Continent, Canada | 2007 Director: Claudine Pommier Northern California Premiere
Culture is no longer a static body of knowledge, values, practices and expressions shared and passed on by a community. It is a dynamic reality. THE POWER OF ART explores how contemporary African women who choose to be professional artists claim their position, and deal with the stereotypes associated with being an African and a woman. The film also focuses on the role professional artists may play in addressing the challenges women are faced with on the African continent.
