Berks Movie Madness: International Animated Film Festival
Wednesday, October 4. 7 p.m. Dr. Tom Schantz
International Animated Film Festival*  This event runs from Oct. 1 to Oct 8, 2006 at the Kutztown Strand Theater. All shows are at 7 p.m. and admission is $5.

The Berks Movie Madness Film Festival is holding its own special night on Oct. 4. The Berks Movie Madness Special Added Attractions for Oct. 4 are:

- 2D and 3D digital animation of Bob Cesca, Camp Chaos Studio, Reading.
- Q&As with Dr. Tom Schantz, Bob Cesca and KU Grad Floyd Bishop, animation studio owner and Blue Sky crewmember.

The International Animated Film Festival also features the 5 shorts nominated for the 2006 78th Annual Academy Awards, including the winner is the 77-minute "The Moon and the Sun: An Imagined Conversation" by John Canemaker and Peggy Stern. The Academy Award material will be shown at the Kutztown Strand on every day of the animated festival. On Sat., Oct. 7 and Sun., Oct. 8, the festival will also feature the best of the 2005 Ottawa International Animated Film Festival

In 1973 Dr. Tom Schantz established The International Animated Film Festival at Kutztown University. The goal of this producer was to bring quality independent animation to the Berks and Lehigh counties. The animations were decidedly not Disney in content, style, or technique; nor could they be labeled as "cartoons," even if some of the films had humor as a theme. Instead of being produced by large studios, these animated shorts were created by individual artists from around the world.

In its heyday, on a long weekend, The International Animated Film Festival drew 3,500 fans. This was before the advent of MTV's Liquid Television brought such avant-garde animation to the general public's attention. The festival ran on campus through the late 1990s, when it succumbed to distributors no longer packaging such festivals in 16mm. Both the 19th Street Theater and the Kutztown Strand worked with Schantz to continue the festival, but its last incarnation occurred in 2001.

But now, like a phoenix, it is back, thankfully, as part of Berks Movie Madness.

*RATINGS: None of these shorts are rated, however, some of the films might gain an "R." While they are by no means created for prurient interests, they are not geared for children. The focus is not humor. Adult themes and language are included in some of the animations. Children will not be admitted without the accompaniment of an adult.
