Los Angeles Pierce College Theatre will conclude its 2022-2023 Season beginning May 5 with Jonathan Larsons musical phenomenon Rent. Performances begin Friday, May 5 and run through Sunday, May 14, 2023 in LAPCs Performing Arts Mainstage Theatre.
Set in Manhattan in the 1990s and inspired by Puccini's opera La Bohème, the ground-breaking musical by Jonathan Larson follows a group of young East Village artists, performers and philosophers as they struggle through the hardships of poverty, societal discord and the AIDS epidemic in the search for life, love and art. Winner of the Tony Award for Best Musical and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, and with a song list that includes the iconic "Seasons of Love," Rent tells a story as relevant today as when it took Broadway by storm more than 25 years ago.
LAPC Theatres production will be directed by Shaheen Vaaz, with choreography by Brian Moe and musical direction by Ryan Espinosa. The cast features Dale Van Slyke as Mark, Kevin Boecher as Roger, Emelysse Paez as Mimi, Aro Caitlin as Tom, Aaron Revilla as Angel, Michelle Johnson as Maureen, Kaitlyn Foley as Joanne and Emmanuel Odaibo as Benny. The ensemble includes Garret Sullivan, Gabriel Pitpitan, Ali Suliman, Andrew Tafur, Jenny Moses, Sammi Kayne, Alany Soils-Coleman, Maya Palacios and Adam Derbigny.
The production features scenic and lighting design by Michael Gend, costume design by Eileen Gizienski and Kathryn Juday, sound design by DJ Medina and projection design by Jordyn Kieffer. Sasha Santa Cruz is the stage manager.
Rent will open in the Performing Arts Mainstage Theatre on the Pierce College campus on Friday, May 5 and continue with performances on May 6, 7, 12, 13 and 14. Performance times are Friday and Saturday at 8pm and Sunday at 2pm. Tickets are priced at $15 for students, $20 for seniors and $25 for general admission. Free parking is conveniently located in parking lot #6 on the Pierce College campus (6201 Winnetka Ave., Woodland Hills, CA, 91371), adjacent to the Performing Arts Center.
Content Advisory: This production contains adult language, sexual content, LGBTQ+ relationships, drug addiction, homelessness, and highlights the HIV/AIDS epidemic as it existed in America during the late 1980s and early 90s.
