Based on James Jones second novel (the first being FROM HER TO ETERNITY), this Academy Award nominated film widely known as Vincente Minnelli's "Rat Pack" film, stars Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, Shirley MacLaine and the late great Steven Peck as MacLaine's "jilted" lover. Set in the after World War II, Sinatra plays a recently discharged soldier whose promising writing career has derailed. One drunken night, he finds himself aboard a bus for his Indiana hometown, with a new "friend" MacLaine. A seemingly naive good-time girl, MacLaine sets her sights on Sinatra, who wants little to do with her as he sets about re-establishing ties with those he left behind long ago (his brother played by Arthur Kennedy) and meeting a new cast of characters including a shady local gambler (Dean Martin) and a creative writing instructor (Martha Hyer) who is smitten with his writing and possibly with him.
