Medici Choir Winter Concert
Medici Choir, Conductor David Gostick
Two works by Ralph Vaughan Williams (born 12th October 1872) to mark the 150th anniversary of his birth, and further seasonal music:
Five Tudor Portraits
This work was completed in 1935 and Vaughan Williams conducted its premiere in 1936. Following a suggestion by Edward Elgar, Vaughan Williams set five poems by the Tudor poet John Skelton using contrasting musical styles, some of which are challenging for the chorus. The choir will sing four of these portraits.
Fantasia on Christmas Carols
This work is founded on some lesser-known English carols that Vaughan Williams collected (from Herefordshire, Somerset, and Sussex), together with fragments of some carol tunes that are more well-known. Composed and first performed in 1912, Vaughan Williams dedicated it to Cecil Sharp.
