Alpine Showcase: Washington's Backcountry Bounty
YES, this moment has arrived. Backcountry Ski & Snowboard Routes: Washington is here! Join us for the official launch for this epic new guidebook, featuring:
* Aerial photos and routes slideshow
* Martin Volken, Ben Haskell, Pro Guiding Service mountain guides, and special guest Lowell Skoog

When Mountaineers Books asked Martin Volken if he could write a brand new guidebook to backcountry skiing in Washington state he said "yes, but I might need some help." Enter mountain guides Benjamin Haskell, Forest McBrian, Trevor Kostanich, Aaron Mainer, Chris Simmons, David Jordan, Kurt Hicks, Margaret Wheeler, Erin Smart, and Solveig Waterfall to the rescue. All told, the team from Pro Guiding Service spent three seasons exploring the Cascades and Olympics (with a little bit of extra credit homework in Canada too) to bring you the all-new Backcountry Ski & Snowboard Routes: Washington.

From the Pickets to Adams and Rainier and beyond, we're stoked to share all the discoveries they made during their extensive route research and celebrate Washington's great backcountry ski culture.

See you at the Mountaineers Program Center (7700 Sand Point Way NE, Seattle). Doors open at 6:45, show starts at 7:30. Look for Dante's Inferno Dogs food truck in the parking lot!

A few comments from Martin Volken about creating this book:
"Coming up with 81 worthy ski tours, descents, and traverses wasn't hard; the challenge was to create a list that offers something for every ability level in a geographically diverse region. We were trying to produce excellent beginner ski tours, classic moderate routes, long and remote traverses, and also what we proudly call modern American ski mountaineering and extreme skiing challenges."

"The Cascades and the Olympics are not the biggest mountain ranges in the world or even in North America. Some ranges are more remote, while others boast a more developed access infrastructure. But, after roaming the mountains of Washington State for more than two decades, we believe our sweet blend of size, relief, remoteness, and reasonable access makes ski touring and ski mountaineering in Washington State a pure affair. Many of the described routes are day tours, some are overnight tours, and still others require a multiday effort. All of them are self-sufficient endeavors; no gondolas, no huts, no hotels, no helicopters, no porters just you and the mountains."

Martin Volken is the founder and owner of Pro Guiding Service and Pro Ski and Mountain Service. He is a Swiss IFMGA Mountain Guide and guides all facets of mountain travel. He has authored and co-authored Backcountry Skiing Snoqualmie Pass and co-authored Backcountry Skiing: Skills for Ski Touring and Ski Mountaineering. He consults for Outdoor Research and K2. He would like to thank Ben Haskell for his amazing effort in managing this group project.
