CIMMfest: David Boykin Expanse with Nicole Mitchell in concert
The authentic Chicago South Side jazz ensemble for modern times, the David Boykin Expanse features Boykin on sax and vocals and Nicole Mitchell on flute. They perform original compositions that infuse hip hop style rhyming into jazz without sacrificing the core elements of eachthe rhythmic complexity, especially swing feel, of jazz; the harmonic complexity of jazz; and the use of multisyllabic words, varied rhyme scheme, alliteration, metaphor, and other poetic devices common to some styles of hip hop emceeing.
