Celebrating a new era: Mozart, Martines, and a Martini
W. A. Mozart: Coronation Mass, K. 317; Regina coeli, K. 276
Marianna Martines: Dixit Dominus
Giovanni Battista Martini: Domine, ad adjuvandum me festina
With professional orchestra
To celebrate a new era and our new Artistic Director, Dr. Michael Driscoll, Commonwealth Chorale offers a concert in the vibrant tradition of the Viennese salon, performing works by three musically-linked composers: Martini, Martines, and Mozart.

The famous Italian music theorist and composer Giovanni Battista Martini crossed paths with both Marianna Martines and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Like Mozart, Martines musical talent was evident from an early age. While still a child, she sang while accompanying herself on harpsichord at the Austrian Imperial Court. In 1773, Martines penned an autobiographical letter to Martini. That same year, with sponsorship from Martini, Martines was the first woman elected to the Accademia Filarmonica di Bologna. Martines celebrated this accolate by composing her masterpiece Dixit Dominus, the large motet we will perform.

Mozart was also a member of that same Accademia having also been recommended by Martini, who was one of his early teachers. Because of this connection, Mozart was one of the many performers and musicians Martines hosted at her frequent musical salons In Vienna. If you appreciate the music of any one of these three, youll appreciate the creations of them all. Join us to celebrate these three friends and their music as interpreted by our new Artistic Director Michael Driscoll.

Celebrating bluegrass and love
Carol Barnett: The World Beloved: A Bluegrass Mass
Kevin Siegfried: Shaker song arrangements
Featuring renowned bluegrass ensemble Monroe Crossing
A Commonwealth Composer Concert

Classical or bluegrass? In our second concert of the season, no need to choose. Composer Carol Barnett has combined two styles in her unique bluegrass Mass, The World Beloved. In her unusual approach Barnett has written what she calls her cheery sacred music, blending the usual solemnity of a Mass with down-home energy and invigorating rhythms of bluegrass. The performance will be accompanied by the renowned bluegrass band, Monroe Crossing.

In addition, the Chorale will perform a selection of Commonwealth Composer Kevin Siegfrieds acclaimed arrangements of Shaker songs. This program also features Monroe Crossing performing a set of their electrifying blend of classic bluegrass, bluegrass gospel, and original bluegrass.

Celebrating harmony in troubled times
John Rutter: Requiem
Florence Price: Praise the Lord; selections from Communion Service in F
With Sonja DuToit Tengblad, soprano, Susan DeSelms, organist,  and professional orchestra

In troubled or sad times, people the world over seek solace and greater harmony in musical settings of religious texts. In composing his Requiem, Rutter sought to write music that was consoling while also conveying a sense of journeying from darkness to light. Price draws on Psalm 117 and the text of the communion service in creating music that uplifts, inspires, and calms. With all the challenges of recent years, join us in our final concert of the season for music that comforts, helps our spirits move from darkness to light, and gives hope for more harmonious times.
