ALBUQUERQUE CHAMBER SOLOISTS SEASON OPENER
PLEASE NOTE OUR NEW START TIME OF 2:00PM!
Our season-opening concert begins with the masterful Piano Quartet in G minor, K. 478 by Mozart. Composed in 1785 for piano, violin, viola, and cello to fulfill a commission from his publisher, it is considered the first major work for this combination of instruments, a combination that was later taken up by Brahms, Dvorak, Schumann, and Faure, among others.
Next up are two gorgeous songs for the unusual combination of soprano and piano trio by the American composer Amy Beach, "A Mirage" with text by Bertha Ochsner, and "Stella Viatoris" with text by Jessie Hague Nettleton.
We close with the first string quartet, in C minor, op. 51, no. 1, of Johannes Brahms. His respect for the genre of the string quartet, the long shadow of Beethoven, and his own relentless perfectionism led to a lengthy compositional process. It took around 8 years and as many as 20 attempts before he allowed his opus 51 to be published in 1873, when he was 40 years of age. This is Brahms in full flower, a perfect marriage of intellectual rigor and emotional depth.
Our performers for this concert will be pianist Tzufeng Liu, soprano Jennifer Perez, violinists Megan Julyan Holland and Ruxandra Marquardt, violist Kimberly Fredenburgh, and cellist James Holland.
