San Francisco Choral Artists & Whole Lotta Noyse; Magen Solomon, Artistic Director
SF Choral Artists & Whole Noyse Renaissance wind band perform Early Music and a new work by Ted Allen about a 16th Century Mexican historical figure. Also works by Brahms, Clemens, Distler, Lassus, Parker, and others on themes of Sound, Music, and Silence.

The premiere work, based on a poem cycle by local poet Lucha Corpi, explores different aspects of a native woman known to the Spanish as Marina, who aided Hernan Cortes in the 16th c. in Mexico. Also known as La Malinche, she has acquired mythical status over the centuries, and has been both revered and reviled. A daughter of a noble Tabascan family, she was sold to Mayan traders as a girl to protect the inheritance claims of a half-brother. Eventually, she was given with other slaves to Cortes.

Ted Allen is featured Composer-in-Residence.  An Oakland resident and California native, his musical associations have included the New York Ballet as well as Metallica and Nintendo.

Nationally-recognized San Francisco Choral Artists regularly champions the work of living composers. Known for eclectic programming, the Choral Artists specialize in a cappella music, both choral masterpieces and vibrant new music.  Now in its 24th season and 14th under Artistic Director Magen Solomon, the critically-acclaimed 24-voice ensemble continues to introduce new audiences to the joy and power of choral music.

This is an unusual program, of interest to lovers of both Early Music and new works.
