Masterpieces 2022
Holt Ballet Conservatory is proud to present Masterpieces 2022--scenes from Adolphe Adam's timeless ballet Giselle, and Ludwig Minkus' resoundingly popular Don Quixote. A tragedy of overwhelming beauty and a romantic comedy of fiery passion, complement each other with their contrasts. Something here for every audience member, whether a seasoned fan of the ballet or a ballet novice looking for a new love in life!  Join the cast and crew of Masterpieces 2022 for a delightful evening of beauty in music, choreography, costumes, sets, and, most of all, the loveliness of accomplished dancers!
Act I: A dank and shrouded forest in the medieval Rhineland: This is where the Wilis, ghosts of scorned brides, gather. Any man caught here between midnight and dawn will be drawn under their spell and forced to dance until they die. Luna Quaglia plays the role of Giselle, a heart -broken maiden whose love for the man who betrayed her outweighs her sense of abandonment. Miss Quaglia performs the role with a power and grace that defies her youthful 16 years of age.  Talented and beautiful, she brings unexpected emotional maturity and powerful technique to the role.
Act II opens with the joyful exuberance and color of a Renaissance Spanish sunrise! Gaiety, energy, humor, and liveliness pound off the stage in waves of joyful music and choreography.  Kitri, the fiery daughter of Lorenzo, the tavern innkeeper, seeks to wed her beloved Basilio, the poor barber, much to the consternation of her father who has the rich nobleman, Gamache, in mind for his daughter.  Kitri, performed by Tenaya Anderson with verve and power, beautifully embodies the lively spirit and joyful spirit of Kitri. Guest artist Christopher Selbie, who dances the characters of Albrecht, the remorseful lover of Giselle, and Basilio, the suitor of Kitri, brings finesse and strength to both roles. A versatile performer, Mr. Selbie's ballet technique and partnering skills display both range and depth.
A supporting cast of soloists and corps dancers adds to the pre-professional quality of both stories.  Fifty-seven dancers from Holt Ballet Conservatory have been rehearsing since the middle of February to bring to Nevada County some of the finest ballet to be seen on our local stages.  Supported by caring coaches with professional backgrounds, and volunteering parent costumers and production staff, these two evenings of outstanding entertainment promise to be just what the audience members need to let go of the troubles of the world and embrace and enjoy the joyful accomplishments of these dedicated, talented and enthusiastic young performers!
