You Know You're White, Now What?
Maybe you've read Kendi, book-clubbed Oluo, YouTubed DiAngelo, or gone to a diversity training at work...
Maybe you've marched, hosted a phone bank, or donated to Real Rent Duwamish. Or maybe you're just beginning to think about antiracist actions you're going to take...

Wherever you're at, you know whiteness is a system that works through you. You want to keep your eyes open to the damage it causes and learn how you can alleviate its harms.

Crafted by two white educators who've long grappled with their own good intentions, this virtual workshop centers the practice of seeing whats meant to stay hidden. Using an equity-based format, well focus on two aims: honing our ability to see how the system of whiteness works in and around us, and building the capacity to sit with our feelings and reactions as they arise in race-based conversations. We do this so we can be useful as we find our way into upending systemic racism.

We designed this virtual space for white-identifying people to reflect on our whiteness. This helps us to stay accountable to one another, build community, and alleviate BIPOC from having to support us through our work. We recognize that this group does not include the necessary work of being in communication with and accountable to BIPOC, and so we we recommend finding ways to do that work elsewhere. Groups are limited to 12, allowing each participant the time to participate and the luxury of a circle of attentive listeners.

Please contact either james or Martha if you have questions about whether this workshop is right for you.

WHAT PARTICIPANTS HAVE SAID
"Being encouraged to better understand my personal evolution within the racial equity lens was invaluable. We have so far to go, but this was a great start."
"I have known that I am white half my life now and have grappled with the "now what" part for most of that time. I still don't have all the answers but being in circle with others who have spent as much, or more, time grappling with this as well was healing and hopeful."
"The workshop with Martha and James was very beneficial for my anti-racist work. They created a safe environment where I could open up and access deep insights and learning."
"The facilitation was top-notch! The space felt warm and welcoming and invited reflection towards change."

ABOUT THE FACILITATORS

james boutin is a fourth-generation white American whose ancestors arrived in the United States from Western Europe during the late nineteenth-century. His professional background is primarily in public education. He has been facilitating conversations about race and society for more than fifteen years and approaches this work informed by nonviolent communication, process-oriented psychology, and critical theory. He loves dance, writing, silence, and big ideas. He also has a deep interest in personal and social change. He is currently studying in a degree program for process-oriented psychology and conflict studies at the Process Work Institute in Portland, Oregon.

Martha Hurwitz is a coach, consultant and facilitator focusing on racial equity and self-employment. She is the granddaughter of immigrants from Eastern Europe fleeing anti-Semitism who arrived in the U.S. just as Jews became seen as whites. Two quick generations later, Martha benefits from generation wealth-building: education, housing, health care, family backing...while so many others are systematically disadvantaged. Awakened to the harm the system of whiteness causes, Martha made an antiracist/pro-equity shift in her parenting, her business concept, day-to-day priorities. She is a long-time educator whose career has included co-founding a democratic/non-agist school, teaching qigong to people with cancer, managing child welfare improvement efforts, and leading Outward Bound courses.

For the month of April, Martha and james will be donating 15% of their earnings to Choose 180, a Seattle area organization that transforms systems of injustice and supports the young people who are too often impacted by these systems. www.choose180.com
