Mike Marshall & Big Trio
We are pleased to welcome Mike Marshall and Big Trio featuring Alex Hargreaves and Paul Kowert. The concert will open with a set of Brazilian choro music by Danilo Brito and Colin Walker. At the request of the artists, this concert will be unamplified, allowing a purity of acoustic sound often lost under amplification.
Mike Marshall is one of the worlds most accomplished and versatile acoustic musicians, a master of mandolin, guitar and violin whose playing is as imaginative and adventurous as it is technically thrilling. Able to swing gracefully from jazz to classical to bluegrass to Latin styles, he puts his stamp on everything he plays with an unusually potent blend intellect and emotion - a combination of musical skill and instinct rare in the world of American vernacular instrumentalists.
Mike has since been at the forefront of the acoustic music scene since joining the original David Grisman Quintet at age 19. Throughout his career, Mike has performed and recorded with some of the top acoustic string instrumentalists in the world, including jazz violinist Stephane Grappelli, fiddle virtuoso Mark O'Connor, five-string banjo phenom Bela Fleck, violin master Darol Anger, bassist and MacArthur Fellowship winner Edgar Meyer, and classical violinist Joshua Bell.
Sixteen year-old Fiddler Alex Hargreaves is the youngest contestant to ever win the Grand Champion division at the National Oldtime Fiddlers' Contest in Weiser, Idaho. Along the way, he has studied and performed a wide variety of string music styles including classical, jazz, bluegrass, newgrass, oldtime, Scottish, Texas style, and western swing. In 2007, Alex was awarded a Belle Foundation Cultural Development grant for his musical achievements and was also chosen for an Alternative Styles award from the American Strings Teachers Association . In 2005, Alex was awarded the Daniel Pearl Memorial Violin .
Bassist Paul Kowert is currently in his first year of study with Hal Robinson and Edgar Meyer at The Curtis Institute of Music. He began playing the violin at age three and the bass at age nine. When he was twelve, Paul was the principal bassist in Disney's Young Musicians Symphony Orchestra at Avery Fisher Hall in New York City. At fourteen, he soloed with the Madison Symphony Orchestra as winner of the Fall Concerto Competition. As a sophomore, Paul joined the UW Chamber Orchestra, and he has been the youngest member of the Madison Symphony Orchestra for the last two years.
Mike also has a deep love and appreciation for with choro, a Brazillian indigenous music that is to that country what bluegrass is to the U.S. He embarked on an in-depth study of the style that resulted in the CD "Brasil (Duets)" and contines to perform and record with top names in the choro world. This concert will open with a set by Danilo Brito and Colin Walker.
