Ryan Meisel Plays the Blues

This album is a collection of jazz tunes using the standard blues form. All of these songs were derived from bits and pieces of a composition class project that I did in college 22 years ago. The assignment was to write a blues head every day for three weeks. It didn't matter the style. We just had to write something new every day. The tunes originally were not very good but each one had something about it, a riff, a chord, a rhythm that was interesting enough at the time but never went anywhere.
The project was placed into a file of handwritten sketches and has followed me around since. I occasionally would pull out the pieces but never took them anywhere. When we were quarantined in the Spring of 2020, I had the inspiration to compose and reflect on our situation and went back to that file. I began rearranging the tunes and piecing them together in a way previously not considered. What came out of this was a new project, and with the current state of our society, there was no lack of inspiration or at the heart jazz, a protest to be made with the music.
