Old Franklin County Jail Ghost Hunt
Our ghost hunts at the Old Franklin County Jail will shake you to your very core.

The Old Franklin County Jail is one of the most haunted locations in south central Pennsylvania.

Activity that has been reported includes shadows, mysterious noises, disembodied moans, being physically touched, and feelings of tension in certain areas.

Location History:

In the early 1700s, the land that would become Franklin County, Pennsylvania was settled and traveled by Native Americans, including the Iroquois, the Lenape, and the Shawnee. Treaties resulted in the land being settled by the English after the French and Indian War.

In looking at Chambersburg today, there are more than 300 years of history to consider. You can think about the early tensions with Native Americans, the many different battles that occurred, or the horrific events of 1864 when Confederate troops were said to set Chambersburg on fire.

On east King Street, an imposing structure stands as it has for more than 200 years. What stories will this building tell? Do you step inside and find out? Absolutely! Its time to spend a night locked up at the ominous Old Franklin County Jail!

In 1818, The Franklin County Jail was constructed to house criminals and those condemned to the gallows. The basement was used as a dungeon, where the condemned were often shackled, beaten, or murdered prior to their date with the noose in the courtyard.

In 1862 as the nearby shops were burned, the Franklin County Jail remained untouched. The jail escaped damage again when Confederate general Robert E. Lee and 70,000 soldiers took up residence nearby. Yet again, in 1864, as a significant portion of Chambersburg was burned, the jail stood unscathed.

By 1920, the gallows in the courtyard became inactive and the area served as a recreation area. In 1971, the Old Franklin County Jail  was retired. Today, the Old Franklin County Jail houses the Franklin County Historical Society.

The Paranormal:

The Old Franklin County Jail housed criminals who were sent to serve their time. At least 7 known souls were hanged at the gallows and many more were subjected to inhumane treatment in the basement.

Join us for an investigation and see who may plead innocence, who may show no remorse, who may want to tell their side of the story, and what restless spirits may be looking for repentance or revenge.

As you explore this ominous old building, step into the old doctors office on the first floor. Will you see the scene of bodies stacked on the floor in front of the fireplace? Will any spirit come forward to tell you about it? They just might.

Step into any of the old cells and snap a few photos. Will you catch the orbs that appear specifically by names and dates that are still etched into the concrete walls?  Perhaps one of those names will step forward with their story.

As you walk around the Old Franklin County Jail, will you hear the mysterious moans and noises from below? Take a trip to the basement and find out if you feel the tension that remains from the horrific events that occurred. See if you hear any words from the condemned, or perhaps feel their touch.

Go out into the recreation area, where some met their deaths on the gallows. Will you hear the last words of those given the ultimate sentence? Will you be met with the cries for forgiveness, threats of retribution, or proclamations of innocence? Theres only one way to find out!

After death, some souls remain to haunt the Old Franklin County Jail just as they were haunted by their crimes and treatment during imprisonment. Will any of these restless souls want to communicate with you and perhaps tell you why they remain? Spend a night locked down with us and you may find out!
