Martinsburg Roundhouse Ghost Hunt
Our ghost hunts at the haunted Martinsburg Roundhouse will test the boundaries of your resolve.

The Martinsburg Roundhouse is one of the most haunted locations in West Virginia.

Activity reported at this massive location include apparitions, shadows, mists, footsteps and disembodied voices.

Location History:

Situated deep in the Shenandoah Valley of West Virginia is the historic city of Martinsburg.

While strolling the streets in a city that survived decades of bloodshed during the civil war, your eyes gaze upon a massive set of buildings.

You are standing at the entrance to Martinsburg Roundhouse! This unique location boasts an incredible history and stories of hauntings.

The Baltimore and Ohio (B&O) railroad system became present in Martinsburg during the 1840s as expansion created a need for engine and machine shops in the city. After the secession of West Virginia in 1861, long and violent civil war battles resulted in the destruction of many trains, bridges, telegraph wires, and shops around the area.

Following the events that took a heavy toll on Martinsburg, construction of the Roundhouse lasted from 1866 to 1872. The construction replaced the original set of buildings that were destroyed by confederate soldiers during their assault on the B&O railroad system.

The Roundhouse facility emerged as one of the largest employers in the area and helped to stabilize the city of Martinsburg, which suffered greatly as a result of war. In addition the Roundhouse served as a major transportation hub in the region, keeping the B&O railroad system in a position to thrive after the catastrophic damage that occurred.

On July 14, 1877, railroad workers went on strike to protest the cutting of wages by the B&O railroad. The strike lasted more than a month and spread to other states before President Ruthorford B Hayes sent federal troops to end the chaos.

By 1988, a decline of railroading and the transfer of local operations to other locations resulted in the abandonment of the Roundhouse facility. The eastern portion of Roundhouse was damaged during a fire set by vandals in 1991. In 1999 the Berkley County Commission purchased the location, transferred it to the state of West Virginia, and restoration efforts have resulted in the preservation of the last standing cast iron frame Roundhouse in the world.

The Paranormal:

The haunted Martinsburg Roundhouse stands surrounded by 160 years of history that was often violent, destructive, and resulted in death. The activity reported at this location may be frequent and intense.

Apparitions of some of the more than 1,000 civil war soldiers who died in the area have often been seen. In addition, apparitions of city residents and Roundhouse employees have been spotted in the buildings and on the grounds.

Unexplained fog, and mists are known to appear inside Roundhouse. Visitors have reported the smell of burning wood, a sensation of heat as if standing next to an open flame, and the appearance of smoke.

Mysterious puffs of pipe or cigar smoke are known to occur, along with the overwhelming scents of tobacco and lilacs. Temperature changes are often reported both inside Roundhouse and along the grounds.

Will you be the one to venture into the attic and encounter the misty apparitions that have been seen there on many occasions? Perhaps youll communicate with one of the soldiers who passes on their feelings of dehydration, nausea, and headaches to the living.

As you walk around the grounds and explore the inside of Roundhouse, you may be lucky enough to catch the full sentences that previous investigators have captured. Or you may see one of the many apparitions that are said to inhabit the entire location.

There are many stories to be told. There are civil war soldiers who died under extremely violent circumstances in terrible conditions and were never properly laid to rest. There are citizens who felt the destruction of the war, losing absolutely everything and being brought to a point of desperation. And there are Roundhouse employees who did their best to help keep their employer and the city of Martinsburg on track after reaching the brink of  complete destruction.

Roundhouse has so many spirits with stories to tell. Join us for a night and see who is looking to sit and tell their stories to you!
