S.E.M. Ensemble Holiday Concert 2021
Following a tradition started in 1984, the S.E.M. Ensemble will present its annual holiday concert on December 20th. This year, the concert will be held at Zürcher Gallery in Manhattan. The concert will feature flute solos performed by Petr Kotik as well as music by Kotik, Jon Gibson, John Cage, and the Czech avant-garde composer Vladimír rámek. Members of the S.E.M. Ensemble will perform an excerpt of Petr Kotiks Many, Many Women (1975-1978, on text by Gertrude Stein), which hasnt been heard in New York since 2013. The program will also include Three in One (2019-22), a collage of three recent compositions by Kotik, performed simultaneously.

Three in One was conceived of for a project at Brooklyn College, which has since been postponed due to the pandemic. The original idea was for an outdoor performance in the large East Quad of the College. Instead, it was premiered last August at the Ostrava Days festival. The three pieces are: Tuba mirum (2019) for trombone or tuba and percussion; No Agency (2020) for alto flute; and Strings and Lines (2021) for solo violin.

Many Many Women (1978-80), for voices and instruments, is a large-scale composition that can be performed in its entirety or in excerpts. The piece uses the text of Gertrude Steins 86-page novella Many Many Women, and the score contains 173 sections on 381 pages. The most recent complete performance of Many Many Women took place at Ostrava Days 2013. SEM will perform a 20-minute excerpt on December 20th.

Petr Kotik has been performing Jon Gibsons Equal Distribution No. 1 since the piece was composed in 1977. He most recently performed the piece shortly after Gibsons passing in 2020, as a tribute to the composer, a close friend of Kotiks. Kotik will also perform two pieces that were composed for him: 6 Minute Exercises for Petr Kotik (1960) by Vladimír rámek; and a flute version of Cheap Imitation (1969), that John Cage created for Kotik in 1982.
