BABETTE'S FEAST
Gabriel Axel's 1987 Danish art film Babette's Feast is more than a flick about French dinners and conservative preachersbased on the Karen Blixen story of the same name, the film is an exploration of the spiritual and physical choices one makes in life, and the role art plays in those choices. And it's absolutely fantastic. While Babette's Feast is bleak, and often ponderous and stony, it eventually resolves as a moving hymn to art.
Babettes Feast is a story from a collection titled Anecdotes of Destiny and tells the story of a French servant, Babette, who spends a sizable lottery prize preparing a gourmet meal. It takes place in a Norwegian village on December 15, 1883, a Sunday.
