Linda Austin Dance in "Universe (Paired Spectacular Part 1)" + Theory1:Dance in "Peregrinate"
ONE NIGHT ONLY. Aquarian birthday party at 8:30 following performance
In celebration of Linda Austin's 55th birthday and to raise travel funds for an upcoming New York area performance in February and a residency at Robert Wilsons Watermill Center in March, Performance Works NorthWest presents work by Linda Austin and Theory1:Dance, with a birthday party in honor of all Aquarians to follow. Linda Austin, with Kaj-anne Pepper and Stephanie Lanckton, presents a sneak preview of Universe, a step along the road toward a hinged two-part evening length piece titled "Paired Spectacular", a response by to the work of Judson era innovators Deborah Hay and Yvonne Rainer. In "Universe", Austin engages with an ambiguous and erratic world of loud meows, tangled dental floss, popcorn and impossible or contradictory performative and perceptual tasks (a la Deborah Hay).
LINDA AUSTIN has been creating work since 1983, based in NYC until 1998, when she moved back to her native state of Oregon and founded Performance Works NorthWest in Portland. Her work has been presented by PS 122, the Danspace Project, Northwest New Works at On the Boards in Seattle and Portland's TBA Festival, with support from the New York Foundation for the Arts, the Oregon Arts Commission and the Paul G. Allen Foundation, among others. Her most recent project was a site-specific dance at the Lawrence Halprin-designed Lovejoy Fountain as part of City Dance, a Portland homage to the work of both Larry and Anna Halprin. She finds renewed inspiration in her own puzzlement at the idea of performance.
Theory1: Dances "Peregrinate", created and performed by Tracy Broyles, Meshi Chavez and Stephanie Lanckton, has been created as a cross-country collaboration between three good friends. Interested in how mental space shifts while in transit, as well as the difference between real and imposed time, the three went for walks in different places at the same NOW time. From these walks they archived movement, thoughts, images and compiled them into a score for your viewing pleasure. This score premiered at Movement Research at Judson Church (NYC.) This score will be performed again in different spaces at different times.
THEORY1:DANCE plays with performance as the manifestation of psychic space and loose narrative that tracks a psychological shift or transformation. Founded in 2004 and based from Portland, OR, the company has received funding, support and residences throughout the NW.
