Majel Connery makes electro-art-dream-pop with repressed classical influences. Her music has been called thoroughly Schubertian by the Wall Street Journal, and her voice crystalline by the Chicago Reader. Majel wrote songs for Radiolabs Gonads series, released as a digital album on Bandcamp. She performs and records with performer/composer collective Oracle Hysterical, and with Sky Creature, a new duo with Matt Walsh (of indie-rockers The Forms) debuting in fall 2020. As a solo artist, she has released two EPs including Anything Chartreuse, called dreamy art pop with the sensitivity and nuance of classical music (Second Inversion), and is working on her first full-length album.
After orbiting academia for 15 years, in 2015 Majel slipped into the professional music stream as an aspiring singer and composer. Since then, as Mohr Visiting Artist at Stanford, she commissioned and performed Pulitzer Prize winner Caroline Shaws Contriving the Chimes, written for Connery and the St. Lawrence String Quartet, and staged by opera director Christopher Alden. As Mellon Visiting Artist at Wellesley, she commissioned and performed Aeolus, a rock monodrama with throat singing by Rome- and Berlin Prize-winning composer Ken Ueno. She is also known as co-founder and director of the experimental opera company, Opera Cabal (2007-2018). Majel holds an A.B. from Princeton, a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago, and has taught at UC Berkeley, Stanford, Wellesley and Princeton.
Sky Creature is the spiritual child of Matt Walsh and Majel Connery, an unlikely friendship between a punk rocker and an opera singer. Worlds apart, Walsh toured with post-punk band, The Forms, while Connery grew up a student of classical music and opera. The two collided in a recording studio in 2001, bonded over My Bloody Valentine, and then, in an act of blind faith, formed a band 20 years later. Following the bands official debut opening for the Wild Yaks July 17, 2021, Sky Creature tours both coasts in the fall of 2021. Their first LP, Inventions (on Open Ocean) drops in spring 2022.
