Learning About Advertising and the Virginia Fair Housing Law
According to an article about advertising from the Fair Housing Center of Central Indiana, "Advertising is a very strict part of fair housing laws because of its impact and the great number of people who may view an advertisement. Advertising plays a major role in determining whether a housing market is truly open and free from discrimination. Advertising that sends a message, no matter how subtly, that a particular group of people are not welcome due to their protected class will discourage those people from seeking information or pursuing the housing."
For many years we have seen ads for housing stating, "perfect for a single person or couple", "no children or dogs allowed, "no criminals allowed", or "prefer Hispanic female between the ages of 35 and 50 and Christian". Did you know that those words are in total odds to what the law requires. Join us for this fun and interactive workshop that includes a quick overview reminder of the law and how housing provider should handle the creation and publication of the law.
Bring pen or pencil and paper along with your creative juices. Feel free to share this information with any other interested persons or organizations. See you next Thursday!!!
